Vinarija Mulatsák, Punitz, Südburgenland, Austria, and a name that sounds like a Balkan winery but turns out to be something much more fun. A small natural cider and fruit pet-nat project from the southern tip of Burgenland, near the Hungarian border, run by Michael Kertelics and crew. It started the way the best ones do. A few vines planted, a few small batches of wine, and a lot of experimenting with whatever fruit and veg was growing in the garden.
At some point they tasted the results and just knew. Forget making wine the usual way, let’s go all in on natural ciders and fruit pétillants naturels. Nothing else. No pretence about being a classic Austrian estate, no polish, no obvious category to put them in.
The names say everything about the energy. Mischkulanz, Rudi Brudi, Sprudlovitz, Kids. A bit cheeky, a bit chaotic, completely unpretentious. And there’s the Konsorten project too, a collaboration with two other winegrowers, bringing their grapes into a shared bottle. Community over ego.
What I love is how much this ties into Austria’s wider natural fizz boom. Everyone’s tired of rules, and you’ve got a generation of young producers in places like Südburgenland making vibrant, unfiltered, funky drinks from whatever the land gives them. Pet-nat as freedom, not fashion.
Small, scrappy, spirited and properly alive. The kind of thing you drink cold, in a big group, without overthinking it.
