Felix Caspar

Felix Caspar, Margaret River, Western Australia, and a good one to know about if you like your Cabernet with a bit of attitude. Brothers Ruben Felix and Phillip Caspar started the label in 2017, and their first release was a Cabernet Sauvignon that became “The Murray,” still made every year alongside a growing run of single-block and single-variety wines.

Their approach is pleasingly simple. Hand pick good fruit from growers who respect the land, then keep additive-heavy processing well out of the cellar and use traditional, hand-made winemaking. Nothing fancy, nothing overworked. It’s a refreshing counterpoint to a region sometimes pegged as polished and commercial.

The Wilyabrup Cabernet gets plenty of love. The OriginalX is a good example, big and bold but bright and fruity with a savoury finish, ink and pepper rather than heavy oak. Margaret River Cabernet has serious pedigree, and it’s brilliant to see younger producers leaning into it with a lighter hand and a looser, more playful attitude.

There’s a music thread too. Skin Contact and PJ Caspar spinning records at a Fremantle food and wine dinner tells you what you need to know about the vibe. Good tunes, good food, good wines, brothers behind the whole thing, which is the best way to do it.

New names in Margaret River who aren’t afraid to be a little cheeky and keep it simple. Felix Caspar is exactly that.
