Grandbois Weine

$0.00

Grandbois Weine, Maring-Noviand, Middle Mosel, and a proper change-of-scene story. Philippe, a French Canadian, and his wife Tanja met in the Okanagan Valley while both working in wine and hospitality, then packed up and moved to the Mosel in 2018. First-generation winery, no inherited vines, no dynasty to lean on, just a family willing to start from scratch on one of the most historic slopes in the world. Kids Claire Anne and Henry Clarence are part of the picture too.

Organic farm and winery, tucked away on the old Mosel path just a few hundred metres from historic Lieser. First vintage under their own label was 2021, after a few years of collaborative projects with other German winemakers. In 2022 they opened a little Kabinett stand, a tasting room and outdoor catering at the property, because a good winery should be somewhere you actually want to hang out.

Fruit comes from proper Mosel names, Maringer Sonnenuhr, Honigberg, Kestener Herrenberg, Noviander Klosterberg, Lieserer Schloßberg, with a bit of Saulheimer Domherr sneaking in from Rheinhessen. Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Bacchus, Pinot Blanc, and they've picked up a reputation for natural wines that tell a story, indigenous yeast, no additions.

The names are the giveaway. Container Riesling, Hip Hopfen, Bad Behaviour Bacchus, Unicorn Knight Chardonnay, Mix-Tape Cuvée, Kestrel Really Late Harvest. Mosel Riesling has plenty of history, but nobody said it had to be stiff. Serious dirt, serious fruit, a good sense of humour on the label.

Aperitif wines, classic Riesling, Pinot, and a few weird and wonderful extras. A new voice on the Mosel and a very welcome one.
